I decided to give Lance parents. I think the whole child of mysterious unknown origins thing turned out to be a bit too cliche, and it really was unnecessary. Lance now is raised by his actual parents, and there is very little mystery about his origin, though I still had to come up with something clever to explain his strange name: Lance Regal Halberd. The name seems almost comic to me now, but I really don't have the heart to change it at this point. Besides, I still like it.
Anyway, despite these ordinary beginnings for him, Lance still turns out to be quite an extraordinary person. I think I like it better this way, because I don't want there to be just tons and tons of evidence that Lance is somehow mysterious. Just a little something from time to time to keep the reader/player intrigued.
Besides, the heroes and other characters, such as Dyne, have plenty mysterious/interesting origins, so it isn't like the main character has to be all that special.
Anyway, I've got to run along and work on my English paper. Good night.
